Port speeds vary from 10 Mbps to 100 Gbps and beyond, depending on the specific use case. A typical Ethernet switched network may consist of a backbone with relatively high speed connected to lower speed end points through access or daisy chain switches. The latter may be built into end point devices like actuators, sensor or Micro controllers.

The switched Ethernet network is almost always connected to an external network via an access router, which can be wired or wireless.
